Using a card table in my dining room?

Question by sarahbeth: Using a card table in my dining room?
My husband and I are living in a small 1 bedrom apartment in Ca. We’re living in a small place because we’re saving for a house!

Anyway, we’ve looked at dining room tables and they are all too big for our space. So I already own a standard sized card table, and though that might work for the time being.

What can I do to make it look nicer then a card table? Any ideas on where I could get a tablecloth that would go to the floor?
I have searched for one myself with no luck, that’s why i came here thinking someone else might have an idea. Thanks.

Go to the fabric store and find some fabric that would go well with whatever else you have in your apartment, then you can get it cut to however big you need it to be to go to the floor.

my husband and i were married for like 5 years before we got a “real” table. you can actually get the rectangular table clothes and fold them, or what i used to do is go to a fabric store and get remnants, i can’t sew, so i just got the fused tape and ironed seams. this was the best, cuz it was cheap, easy and i could match any decor or party i was having!
have fun & use your imagination.

just go to a fabric shop!! you can almost always find scraps that are more than big enough to serve as a table cloth. or, if you don’t want to go to that extreme, try shelf paper. it looks nice, is inexpensive, and is very easy to remove. also, use a small centerpiece.

You know this is slightly out of the box but why not do a fun theme!

Paint everything on the table different!
just get normal paints and put strips on the legs
blocks of color on the top of table
paint little place mats on it!

I did this for an art class back in high school but with a chair!

I wouldn’t get a table cloth that would go down to the floor, a big tripping hazard and a hassle.

If you sew at all, make a table cloth and then strips to cover the legs. Tie in the back. That way you won’t fight the length of the cloth while trying to eat or sit at the table

Any way you look at it a card table for a dining room is going to feel tacky to those dining. A floor length table cloth won’t chang that. I suggest going to a second hand store or a place which sells inexpensive, lower end furniture and get someting which would feel more solid than a card table.

A gateleg table could be folded and placed against the wall when not in use, to leave the room uncluttered, but opened to full size when having dinner parties.

However, if by “card table” you are talking about a solid , well made, wood table, and NOT a folding card table, then you should be fine.
